It’s not “retire and live a life of luxury” money, at least in many parts of the world.

It’s a lot of money in terms of paying down debt and covering rent for a while, though.

The cap was in place because the Social Security benefit doesn’t increase above the that income.

I don’t think that’s necessarily a good reason for the cap to exist. I expect it’s a compromise to get rich people and idiots on board.

I’m not rich to the point of no longer needing to labor, but I did hit the social security cap one year. I was pissed when I learned why my take home jumped up. I would have rather kept paying.

It’s selfish to want to keep a little more of your vast wealth like you describe. That’s cartoon villainy.

It’s kind of insane to me that there’s an annual cap on social security payments. If your salary is high enough, you stop paying into it partway through the year. That’s ass-backwards. You shouldn’t pay anything for the first chunk of money, and then pay more as you make more.

I know a couple people here who own apartments. Median income here I think is like $115k. None of them are much more than that.

I’m pretty sure property taxes aren’t progressive and I’m baffled as to why.

Make it so like the first 100k is taxed low, and then ramp up so people with millions of property pay through the nose.

Feel like the neighbors that complained should be named, shamed, and had the ire of the state turned on them. They seem to have poor empathy, so maybe some personal experience would stir some up in them.

I am a few steps removed from his social circle. I’ve never met him, but a few friends of mine have. They all have said he’s a sincerely good person.

Now, that’s just a second hand story from the Internet, but for my part that’s helping me be optimistic about him.

People only change their mind from in-group pressure. (That and, sometimes, horrible personal trauma). It’s sad and stupid, but that’s how humans work.

If you want to change trumpers’ minds, you need them to see you as in-group. Otherwise emotions prevail and they won’t listen.

I got the vaccine as soon as it was available. A good friend procrastinated. We saw their little nephew together and hung out indoors one day. The nephew got the flu. My friend got the flu. I seem to be fine. My friend was bedridden for about a week.

They got their flu and COVID shots after they recovered, at least.

I think a lot about my old coworkers that were like “yeah it sucks but like I’m just going to play Dota”. They don’t care. It’s not affecting them so it’s not important. Even though they claim to be left wing or at least anti-trump

And honestly if it did affect them I kind of expect them to either quietly go along into the gas chamber, or be utterly shocked that no one is risking their comfort for them.

Maybe, but they might also say something like “Right. They followed the law and jesus was crucified, saving everyone.” There are probably religious arguments to make, but religion (at least christianity in the US) is often just emotional slop.

One time when I was on a grand jury, I tried to convince the other jurors that we don’t have to send people to jail for marijuana. It’s stupid and unjust, and we can just say no. They don’t make you show your work. (Yes, on a grand jury the prosecutors can just try again, but it wastes their time.)

Those half-awake bootlickers weren’t having it. “We have to do what they told us!” “What, are you a dealer?” “The law is the law. Call your rep is you want to change it.”

Maybe an ad campaign would move the needle, but there are a lot of stupid, selfish, people out there ready to lick the boots.

Someone in my friend group is convinced that things will get so bad people will demand radical change. He thinks that’s the path to socialized healthcare. I don’t think this country has the spirit to reach for great things.
