if you have willingly handed over your primary writing tool to a machine (for which there is no real meaning, association, appreciation, or delight in words), it is difficult for me to take your commitment to writing or “authorship” seriously.

Heather Cox Richardson (historian) talked about this in her politics chat today; she seems to think it’s a combination of a) likely legal quagmire b) with no major benefit given congress will soon be out of session and c) turtle holds a couple of really powerful positions, while he’s out the republicans are hampered.

plus i’m sure any information they have is protected under HIPAA. i expect consequences for disclosing what they know could be very steep for them, no NDA required.

i grew up in the 80s, i was a latchkey kid and i had a tv in my room and in the living room. but there were no screens to hand to me while driving, shopping, attending social or family functions. if i was bored somewhere, my options were to engage, explore, observe, read, or draw.

i think there is something fundamentally different about the relationship cultivated between small people and small, ever - present screens than the large stationary box we had at home.

this is what i’m talking about. i watched A LOT of tv, but there were no tablets to shove at me while shopping or traveling. is the portable screens available to or pushed on kids 24-7 that seems fundamentally different to me than what i experienced as a kid.

yeah, but those of us who grew up on tv didn’t have ubiquitous access to screens either.

late 40’s here, there are no savings. i hope i will be able to work until i die like my mother did.

but presumably us companies can employ individuals who are not citizens at “sites” which are not based in the us?

you know, the price of oil directly impacts the price of electricity where i am. so assuming i could take on a payment equal or more to the cost of my electric bill to even purchase such a vehicle, i would also be sending my electric bill through the roof, plus increased insurance. i literally cannot afford this any better than higher gas, so i keep my fingers crossed that my 15 year old car lasts awhile yet.

capitalists have nickled and dimed a lot of us americans to the brink, there’s no more wiggle room.

(also, bussing to work is two hours one way, i checked. the eight mile trip by bike would be longer i’m sure, but we’re approaching the time of year where heat kills people. literally.)

this is also why i started buying physical books and using my local public library again.

most Americans did not, in fact, vote for this. most Americans do not, in fact, actively support this.

btw, i’m not even sure she was trying to block anyone. in one video, you can see she waves and says “go around!” i think she was just trying to go the other way.

edit - i don’t know that that is what happened, just that there’s now footage from the agent’s phone. can’t really use audio at work.

this is not the first time Texas Dems have left the state to try to push back against the GOP stranglehold.

btw, all the comments i read around here saying Texans deserve [whatever]? we’re fighting a rigged game in this state. Abbot, Paxton etc do not represent us all.
