  • This article is about hiring, not marketing

It’s been some years so I should see if this information is still valid but when I researched it years ago woke marketing basically boiled down to the fact that people are not going to buy a product they don’t want or need just because they like the company that makes the product; but if you were going to buy the product but you don’t like the company, you will purchase from a competitor

So there was some truth to “go woke, go broke”, although I couldn’t find any evidence of a successful company, “going woke” and ending up bankrupt. Usually these companies were already struggling and woke marketing was a last-ditch effort to bring in a new customer base

I like to use a Jack Hammer as an example because it paints a clear picture. If a company makes a Gay Pride Jack Hammer you’re not going to rush out and buy a Jack Hammer you don’t want or need just because you support the cause. But if you were going to buy a Jack Hammer you’ll either still buy the Jack Hammer (meaning the marketing had no effect because you were going to buy it anyway) or you’ll buy a Jack Hammer from another company because you dislike the message

So “woke” marketing had either no real effect or a negative effect.

Companies that already had a strong liberal supporting audience could increase sales temporarily. Like if the average Cards Against Humanity player buys one expansion pack a year the company might get that person to buy two expansion packs this year if one of those packs is a pro Gay Pride pack of some kind, especially if the back supports or charity or something. But that person is not going to continue to purchase two expansion packs a year so after the promotion is over, sales return to normal

However, “going woke” was good for the companies image. As an example, while sales for the Gay Pride baseball game night might be the lowest all season, every year, it’s still better to do it and take the ticket sales lost than not because you don’t want to be one of the only teams that didn’t participate. Being the “transphobic” baseball team is not good. Overtime that can hurt sales, especially if the wrong group of people celebrate your stance against pride night

The last thing you want is a bunch of MAGA hat wearing racists to start rocking your teams jersey as their unofficial uniform. So companies should go woke just to let the world know they’re not OK with bigotry.

  • This is about hiring, not marketing… and while I’ll have to check because it was some years ago, when it came to marketing I found the opposite was true; but not for the reasons you would expect

That being said, it was still better to “go woke”, than not

Basically it boils down to the fact that people typically will not purchase a product they do not want even if they support the company that makes the product

But people who do want the product will not buy from a company if they do not support that company

So as an example, if a jack hammer company “goes woke” and sells a gay pride Jack Hammer sales won’t go up because very few people are going to go out and buy a Jack Hammer they don’t want or need just because they support gay pride. However, those that do need a Jack Hammer will either continue to purchase the Jack Hammer (meaning the woke marketing had no effect because he was already going to buy the Jack Hammer) or they will buy a Jack Hammer from a different company because the “woke” marketing upset them

Companies that already had a strong liberal backing, like cards against humanity, could use “woke” marketing to increase sales, but only temporarily. For instance, if on average a Cards Against Humanity player buys one expansion pack a year, you might be able to get that person to buy two if you make a special time “Gay Pride” pack. Sales will increase for that quarter but then go back to the average after

But it can still be beneficial to “go woke” just to protect your companies image.

For example, “Gay Pride” night at sporting events are usually the worst selling nights. The reason is stated above. You’re not going to go to a baseball game if you hate baseball and those that like baseball will choose to not go on Pride Night if they disagree with the cause. But, it’s still better to have a Pride Night than not have one because being the only team that did not have a Pride Night is a bad look. You don’t want to be known as the only bigoted baseball team in the league

This can be really bad if by some pure chance the wrong group of people support your lack of Gay Pride Night and adopt you as an unofficial spokesperson. The last thing you want is a bunch of MAGA hat wearing transphobic bigots wearing your teams Jersey as part of their unofficial uniform.

It’s better to lose ticket sales on a game or two than wake up and find out that your companies hat is now the hat of choice for the proud boys.

So you go woke to let the world know you are not ok with bigotry

  • McDonalds sells hamburgers for $7

I can beat that. Let me sell you a hamburger for $1

Capitalism approves… the government does not

I’m not allowed to sell you a hamburger. Not without a permit, and an inspection, and a place designated as a business to sell that hamburger from. What, you think you can just cook a hamburger on a grill and sell it to someone?

So I get a business license, find a place of business, get my permits, get my inspection, and open the doors… except all that cost money so I have a $12k loan and a building that costs $3k a month and I still need electricity, water, and wifi. Once all that is paid for I still need to earn enough money that I can go home and pay my own bills and survive

At $1 a hamburger, I’ll never sell enough hamburgers to survive so I have to raise the price. My hamburgers are now $9

McDonalds knows this. They got a stranglehold on the market and while anybody could technically compete and that competition is suppose to keep product quality high and prices low people can’t actually compete

Now McDonalds can make their burgers smaller, the quality worse, and jack up the price… what are you going to do about it?

You think Wendys will save you? Burger King? Nah, they do the same thing

Now apply this to literally everything. Clothes, washing machines, dish washers, etc… I guess in theory I could make a better TV that doesn’t come with a bunch of bullshit advertisements built into it and sell it to you for less, but the government won’t let me

  • I support Luigi

    But also, Luigi did it

I know that. I’ve always known that. He’s never really denied it. He just admitted it himself

We all joke around that he’s innocent and that he was with us at church or whatever… that the real shooter is a woman or whatever… but these are jokes. we don’t actually think he’s innocent, we’re just pretending like he’s innocent to show support

There seems to be a crazy amount of people who don’t understand that though and might actually think that Luigi literally was with me at church that day and that I did actually see a 9 foot Amazonian woman pull the trigger.

There seems to be a crazy amount of people who think Luigi is being framed because they apparently believed the comments they read on the internet not understanding that we’re all joking out of support

  • What? Luigi literally just said he did it.

He told a judge that he followed Thompson to a UnitedHealth Group investor conference and shot him on the morning of Dec 4 2024. He also explained that leading up to the murder he emailed UnitedHealthcare while pretending to be an investor at a firm managing more than $50 million in assets so he could get information about the conference. He also acknowledged building a 3D-printed gun with a silencer and that this was the weapon he used for the shooting.

    And I quote

“On the morning of Dec 4 2024 I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died”

This isn’t new information to anyone who actually knows about the case… we all know he did it, we’re all just pretending like he’s innocent because we support him

yet these comments read like people don’t understand that we’re joking when we say he’s innocent.

That’s concerning that you guys are so thick you literally don’t recognize jokes when you see them anymore.

There’s nothing to argue about it. He did it. He admitted it. He’s pleading guilty.

Anyone in the comments who literally thinks he’s innocent is a fucking moron

  • Because it’s ignorance

I’m worried a large portion of the users on this site are either too dumb to understand we’re joking or just that uninformed about ‘current’ events

It’s kind of scary to think a large group of lemmy users saw me say, “Luigi was with me feeding homeless people at my church” and they were like, “omg, he was?”. Like some shit straight out of idiocracy

No, he was not literally with me. It’s a fucking joke

I did not witness the shooting. Despite what I said on the internet I did not see a 9 foot amazonian woman shoot that man. It’s a bit upsetting to think I’m surrounded by users who believed me

  • Fair. I mean, he is pleading guilty but still, fair point

My bigger point is that I’m concerned that people on this site are talking like they literally believe he’s an innocent man being framed by the government because they didn’t understand all the people on the internet who claimed he doesn’t fit the description of the person they saw do it or whatever are just people joking around because they support his actions

Despite what I might have said in the past, I did no literally witness the crime and no I did not literally see a 9 foot tall bald white man do it

Despite what you might have read people say on the internet, Luigi was not feeding homeless people at churches all across the nation that afternoon

He probably did it. We all know it. He’s pleading guilty. We just love him for what he did

  • It’s not that everyone doesn’t enjoy the same things I do, it’s the way they don’t enjoy it

I don’t know what you like to do for fun but lets pretend it’s, “Play video games”

A sane way to react to someone enjoying something you don’t is:

“that’s cool. I’m not super into video games, but I understand why other people would like them. To each their own”

But that’s not what happened. What happened was:

"I guess playing games is cool if you’re an idiot that likes supporting billionaire tech CEOs who kill the environment with plastic trinkets for nerds who have an obsession with watching millionaires push buttons on the internet. There is life besides video games and there’s a lot of stuff you can do to have fun both alone and with your friends. It’s a shame you don’t understand this. "

That kind of response doesn’t make you as cool as you think it does

My hunch is that this site is full of literal children. The vast majority of you are maybe 16 years old. If you’re older, it’s worse than I thought because it’s embarrassing to be a grown adult who still talks like that. If the internet is encouraging you to think it makes you cool to hate stuff, get off the internet. It’s bad for you. Hating shit isn’t cool, enjoying life is.

I’m happy people all over the world play video games. Yeah, there are some downsides… but I think it’s neat you can play a game tonight with somebody in another country and the two of you can have fun together; and if lots of people can come together for a big event like e3 or GDQ, great! I don’t need to engage in it myself to see how awesome that is
