Jury muskification.

Does Texas not have strip clubs?
historical accuracy in movies
It would be nice to have this occasionally.
I just tell people what team I’m a fan of (Cleveland Browns) and they back away slowly with a look that combines horror and pity.

it might be nice to get out of this entire industry, if only I could afford to
I got pushed out of the industry right before COVID hit, so I haven’t ever dealt with AI. I’m a school bus driver now, which is infinitely more satisfying than programming since I get to drive a big Tonka truck around and gaslight children all day. The only downside is making 1/6 of what I used to make so this is not really a viable alternative for most people. At least I get subsidized health insurance.

His actual, stated defense was that sexual deviancy is directed at only one sex, and since he is attracted to women (while the victim was a boy) he can’t possibly be a sexual abuser. We’ve actually finally hit something that is so illogical even Republicans can’t support it.

Dude has an iron-clad defense, though. Said it’s only abuse if the child is the same sex and he likes women/girls. I really wish I were making that up.
Edit: wow, I actually totally misunderstood his absurd defense. He actually said “sexual deviancy is directed towards one sex rather than two” and since he’s attracted to women (when the victim here was a boy) he can’t possibly be a sex offender. I think we’ve finally found something so far gone that even MAGAts can’t support it.
There’s a ton of new housing construction where I live (Philly suburbs) but it’s almost entirely these $800K “town” houses (in the middle of a fucking field). One of the main companies building them is named “NV Homes”. I wondered who the initials “NV” stood for until I got it: “Envy” homes. It’s depressing to imagine people borrowing a fucking million dollars to buy a big cardboard box because they imagine other people will be jealous of them.
Your dad did the right thing. I got mine 95% done at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars and arthritis basically everywhere, just for the honor of paying $100 a month to park it at a U-haul lot. I know how to weld and rivet now, just as useless as the bus.
Skoolies for me. A few years ago I bought a used school bus and started converting it into a motorhome. I made an account at the main forum (skoolie.net) because there were people there that actually knew useful stuff, primarily about metalworking (which I’d never done before) and the mechanical aspects of bus ownership (which I still don’t know shit about).
Surprisingly (or maybe not) skooliers heavily tend towards being right-wing, trump-loving, gun-toting, immigrant-hating wankers. There are exceptions but they always end up being driven away. The thought of going to one of the annual skoolie gatherings is nightmare fuel for me.

Kids today will never know the joy of writing apps for Blackberry. You wrote them in Java, which was cool and the gang, but when you tried to compile your app and deploy it to your test device, every library module you incorporated into your app had to be signed independently by RIM’s signing servers. If you were lucky this took a few minutes; if you were unlucky it took 45 minutes to an hour. If you were really really lucky it never happened at all because one or more of these signing servers were completely down, and then you could just tell your manager that the signing server was down and go home for the day.
And this would happen even if you’d only changed a single line of code. I got in the habit of making an enormous number of changes before running and testing anything, which is obviously not an ideal practice but was completely necessary in this case. I would also sometimes roll my own code to avoid having to include a particular module. My custom UI, for example, needed to use trigonometry functions but these were part of one of the cryptography library modules which were especially notorious for taking forever to sign. So I wrote my own sin() function instead.
This was probably the main reason Blackberrys were murdered by iPhones, even more than their tiny screens with 16-bit color that RIM refused to upgrade until it was too late. iPhone app development also sucked thanks to its antiquated C-style language, but it was still lightyears beyond Blackberry. RIM was going around offering cash bonuses to developers to write apps for them (my company was offered $30,000 by them) but it still wasn’t even close to being worth it.

“Black Sails”, another person here just mentioned it to me.

historical accuracy isn’t a high priority
I want to see Blackbeard getting a cheesesteak in Philly.

I’ll have to check that out, thanks for the rec.

OK, electric planes are fucked then. No wonder they’re resorting to “$5 of electricity” clickbait bullshit.

Spy magazine back in the '80s used to have an annual “10 worst people, places and things” issue. Trump always made the list, although it was more of an NYC-centric thing. Each listee always had a “mitigating factors” item and Trump’s was always “at least he’s not in politics”. :(
My favorite bit from back then was that Trump once offered to pay for the funeral of a child who had been killed by a bear, and then reneged on the offer.

my grandma also got weirdly angry at everybody and everything right before she started to forget who we were, and eventually who she was
This is depressing. My elderly mother gets enraged whenever someone uses one of her precious Revereware copper-bottomed pots. I’m assuming it’s a precursor to Alzheimer’s, which her younger sister already died from.
I felt like this watching Black Panther. The “bad” guy wanted to give Wakanda’s weapons to the oppressed and downtrodden people of the world, and I was like “yeah, sounds good.”
